The promise of spring and new life is everywhere on the farm now and the newest addition are the lambs little bit earlier then expected but just as lovely
Hoping our bees and bumblebee are active soon helping us with pollination insuring that we get apricots, sweet almonds, peaches and nectarines.
You are kidding your self if you think farming is above nature, despite man’s achievements in the field of technical solutions we are still totally depending on natural systems for our food production. No insects no pollination no fruits and berries it’s very simple, it’s your obligation as a farmer to work with this system not against it. Spreading artificial nutrition that tax our rivers, lakes and ocean hard. Or spraying synthetic chemicals that kill not only the pests but also beneficial insects, poisoning birds and polluting ground water
Bee a bee friend if not for them but for your own sake
Second litter of piglets are now nestling on the straw, guarded by mum they have the best security on the farm. The size difference between adult pigs and their babies is extreme and they are very exposed in the beginning relying completely on their mom for food, heat and protection.
What do you want to be when you grow up? My grandmother asked
A farmer I answer
She always smile and laugh a bit probably think it will never happen with my dad leaving the farm ate the first chance becoming a captain on a ship. But the 6 year old me was more right then me and my grandmother could have known.
Here she is my grandmother Elsa born 1913 with experience and traditions from another time, to live in tune with nature and following the seasons. A respected for everything looking living and knowing that here knowledge past on too me is something I us every day now as a farmer
I will by lying if I say it’s a good day, 3 degrees and rain seldom is.
The only perk is that all you want is to get inside so you finish the days projects quickly.
Two new piglet houses painted and ready for us, and by chance also greatly anticipated when we soon have baby piggies coming and our big houses are needed for the new mothers and kids.
Hope your day didn’t include frostbite like my did and now a decently tempt glenfiddich awaits
