A summer’s day almost 10 years ago

Standing up is our matriarch Astrid and lying down is her successor Ottawa. It was a amazing island to have our cows on roaming free deciding on the own where to go

Skånsk röd cattle in there natural habit one of very few Heritage breeds left in Sweden, the population is now thriving after being ostracized from the herd book a few years back, it’s a paradox that the one that was supposed to be their biggest protector was there biggest foe crippling conservation for a decade.

Game changer

Happy new year from us on the farm

Taking these days to look ahead planing for the future and our most ambitious conservation project ever

Together with some amazing sponsors we a planing a game changing undertaking that will ensure the survival for two of Sweden’s most endangered breeds

Be a part and fallow us on this journey during 2020

It’s getting time to start hatching eggs again

But first it’s a lot of preparation that needs to be done.

We work with conservation and it’s almost impossible to find new breeding stock so all birds we have are hatched here on the farm, working to insure the best possible stock is our number one concern.

The birds ability to save genetic material after a mating during a few weeks makes preparing and a holding period of 30 days the first step after that your breeding flock is putt together. You try to have as many males to females as possible and practical but 1:4 is a good ratio for us and insurers a good genetic mix in the offspring. So 30 day holding period then we collect eggs for 7-14 days before they are placed in the incubator. After a week it’s time to check for blank eggs that are not fertile and remove them to avoid that they explode and contaminant the other eggs. Then we let the eggs be until 4 days before hatching then we move them from the incubator to the Hatcher where the eggs are no longer turned around but still instead this is too make it easier for the chick or duckling too get out and increase survival.

We hatch new breeding stock during the spring then they have all summer to grow and get nice and strong before autumn and winter

Maybe my last Christmas

Best pork

The best pork I ever tasted

Sadly we had to retire our old sow Pia, she ended her days in the garden she lived here whole life.

With the deepest respect for life nothing is waisted, after dry age for a week we started preparing the meat today. On the Swedish Christmas table the pork have the center stage. Since the Vikings the pig have had a almost magical place in Swedish cuisine, and it’s unthinkable not to have ham, ribs, bacon and sausages. Going back to basics doing everything from scratch makes the Christmas dinner be something more then just food, it’s a connection to the generation before us and a tradition to pass on to the kids.

Chestnut baby

Remember last years chestnuts?

Despite being a tough year for farmers it was a great year for nuts.

So good actually that I now finished transplanting 33 mini trees growing from seed, unfortunately it got to dark to take a photo of the seedlings but it will come in our storyline tomorrow. 1-2 more years in a pot then there ready to move outside permanently for our new chestnut grove. When you propagate from seed it’s always a lot of diversity among the seedlings and hopefully we have some exceptional individuals that will like our colder climate here in Sweden

Banana house

Always nerve wracking testing something for the first time, growing bananas in a climate where it’s directly lethal for them most of the year keeps you in your toes. The new heater and thermostat keeps it nice and warm during the night and saves power during the day when the greenhouse is heated by the sun. It’s a fine line keeping it at the right temp so the plants survive but no more you don’t want them to grow more then necessary when they are cramped in too the small winter greenhouse.

New trees!

Indulging my self with some new trees

Two of my favorite varieties of Quince “Vranja” and “Leskovac” really hard and do well on our zon III heavy soils.

Autumn and early winter is a great period to plant trees if you only have the time which is usually the problem.

We had a record harvest this year of quince and are now hopping that these new trees will yield a nice harvest in a few years.
